"Digital transformation," translated into plain words

"Digital transformation" might be the most overused phrase in business — and the most misunderstood. It sounds like big budgets, robots, and a six-month project with a steering committee.

What it actually means

Removing the friction between a customer and their money. That is it. That is the whole thing.

"DM me for price" becomes a website that answers at 2 AM. A paper appointment diary becomes a link that fills itself. "Are you open on Friday?" gets answered by a bot in three seconds while you close the actual sale.

Why the jargon hurts you

Because it makes owners think transformation is for corporations with IT departments. Meanwhile, the café next door added a booking link and quietly started capturing every customer you make wait. The businesses winning right now are not the most technical — they are simply the easiest to buy from.

Next time someone says "digital transformation," translate it in your head: where do my customers still have to wait, guess, or work to give me money? Fix that. You are transforming.
